Becoming an Air Traffic Controller (engineer)
Ensure air traffic safety and control: the mission of Air Traffic Controllers. ATC need a keen sense of responsibility, excellent English, and must meet medical requirements.
ICNA students are paid during their course and are guaranteed employment upon completion of their studies, as civil servants with the Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile (French Civil Aviation Authority.

Objectives

The Air Traffic Services engineering course has a duration of 3 years. Unlike traditional engineering courses, the ICNA course is based on the principle of mixed theory and practice. Effective and original, this approach enables students to acquire both knowledge and professional know-how.

ICNA students are trained in flying skills during their course, and are expected to pass the Private Pilot's Licence (A). The course also includes a period of immersion in an English-speaking country.

Prerequisites

A selective examination is organised specifically to recruit student ATC engineers.  To participate in this examination, you must meet the following requirements:

> Hold the nationality of a member of the European Community or another country having signed the European Economic Area agreement.

>Have passed year 2 of scientific preparatory classes (or year 2 of integrated preparatory classes), or hold one of the following diplomas (before 1 November of the year of the examination):
- L2 (120 ECTS), DUT, scientific or technological BTS, or hold an L2 qualification or diploma (on 1 November of the year of the examination) in mathematics, sciences or a technical field or a qualification, or course recognised as equivalent to one of the qualifications or diplomas listed in decree 2007-196 of 13 February 2007 on academic equivalences, required for entry to selective examinations for civil service positions.

> Aged 26 or under on 1 January of the year of the selective examination,

NOTE: this age limit may be raised in accordance with the applicable legal provisions on civil service.

>Physically fit for employment (see conditions in the paragraph on medical requirements below)

>Hold civic rights; Section n°2 of the criminal record must be blank, as this section is not compatible with ATC positions,

>Compliance with law 97-1019 of 28/10/97 amended, reforming the National military service (contact your home townhall for details),

>Finally, no candidate may attempt the ICNA selective examination more than three times.

* Candidates must produce the necessary substantiation after the medical check-up, when creating the admission file

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must be physically able to exercise the position: this is an indispensable condition for the position of Air Traffic Controller (engineer). Final admission will be confirmed if physical aptitude is declared by a doctor authorised by the Direction Générale de L’Aviation Civil (French Civil Aviation Authority).

Medical conditions: Candidates are encouraged to read these requirements before signing up for the selective examination. Every year, many candidates successfully pass the written and oral tests, but are ultimately rejected due to medical non-compliance. In addition, candidates are informed that, during the course, and at regular intervals during their career, ICNA are subjected to medical examinations, which they must pass to maintain their position as controllers.
